Chicken Update

The girls are doing great and living full time in their coop.  Their favorite foods are strawberries, watermelon rind, and chicken scratch.  I’m trying to train them some, at least to come into the coop when I want them to and maybe to come back when they are free ranging when I want them to.   So far they are either very stubborn or not the smartest chickens in the coop.  They will come every once in a while when I call and throw out treats, but are very inconsistent about it.  At least they are cute.  Here they are when I got them up this morning, sitting on their roost, waiting for me.

Our chickens are big fans of the broccoli leaves left over after I harvest the broccoli from the garden. Most our chickens are pretty smart but we’ve got one exceptionally stupid chicken. He seems afraid of food until he’s certain it won’t attack!

I was talking with Tom Hunt, the guy across the street up at the lake, he says he hardly has any more garbage for composting because his chickens eat most of it. Of course he has many more than 3.
Anyway, he says to keep your egg shells and let them dry, crush them up and mix them with the garbage and the chickens will eat them and get back the calicum and other stuff.
Not really being a cannibal—more like eating your own boogers.

Humm… Were boogers your own commentary or Tom’s? I’ll have to do that, though. Sounds easy enough and beats buying oyster shell for them.
